Leslie Kolovich talks with Chris Stephan one of Florida’s top mens racers about his experience at the “Lake of the Sky”event held on the south shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe.
This was a first for racer Chris Stephan to paddle on the infamous lake that straddles both Nevada and California.
In this podcast Chris talks about meeting up with his team mates (the SupLove crew) in Southern California and traveling to the high elevation of Mammoth Mountain (10,000 feet) for two days in preparation to race in the high elevation of Tahoe. Chris, coming from Florida was very appreciative for the elevation training beforehand. Chris also describes for us the many events that took place at this event. There were SUPCross Sprints, A Sweet Move contest, sponsored by none other than the incredible Sean Sweet of Sweet Water Wear, a 5 mile and a 14 mile. According to Chris this is a MUST DO event. He states this was THE BEST event he has ever been too and he credits the family of organizers, the Bracket Family, and of course Mother Nature for providing such a spectacular backdrop for the event!
According to Chris, “The Aloha Spirit was everywhere” with over 115 participants of all ages and ability, this event is sure to grow and is for sure a destination weekend to mark on your calendars for next year! Enjoy The Podcast Now:
Caribbean Reporter Heather Baus tells Leslie Kolovich how the team from the Islands did in the Battle and gives us the Spanish word for Carnage =Matanza. Congrats Heather with a 7th place overall Elite and Gail Vento with 8th! Listen to the story of Heather’s first lap where she came in sitting on Jenny Kalmbach’s board with Gillian and Jenny’s board on top of hers and all three rode to the beach with a large crash of boards with the rocky beach break, which resulted in a nice sized gash to the bottom part of Heather’s nose. Shall we use the word Matanza? I think so!
Plus we talk with Jim Baus and Eric Walker BOP board handlers. They tell us what it was like being at the waters edge with boards and racers flying in and out ! Communication before the race and during the race is a must. Being able to stay out of the way of other handlers and racers. Not a job for the faint of heart.
West Coast Reporter and Racer Kristin Thomas with guest Elite Racer Brandi Baksic talk with Leslie Kolovich about their BOP experiences. Brandi talks about how she battled for her 2nd place win in the Elite race, her thoughts on the new “heats” for the Elite race, and the award she received from race director Barrett Tester. East Coast Reporter Josh Vajda and Leslie Kolovich discuss how the crew from Florida did in the two day event at Dana Point California. Tampa Bay Elite Racer Chase Kosterlitz joins in to discuss his Battle Run with a first place win in the 14′ class in the distance race. Ft Lauderdale’s Helga Goebel joins us with her experience not qualifying in the heats for the Elite race. Both Chase and Helga discuss their thoughts on the “heats” and why they think it works, and how they think it could work better. The South East really represented at Doheny this year!

West Coast SUP Reporter Kristin Thomas gives us the scoop on 4 events starting off with the very innovative fun event in Folsom California,” A Day at The Beach” sponsored by Surftech.
Then to the Sup Surf event in Hawaii, Duke’s Ocean Fest. It’s a week long celebration in honor of Duke Kahanamoku. Great job Candice and Conner both with first place wins! Kristin gives us the results of the Oregon Open Ocean race and the SUP LBC. Lots of good SUP events last weekend all building up to a sick busy month in September for racing in California!
White Water SUP Reporter Ken Driscoll and guest Melanie Seiler who is the Director for group services and SUP for Adventures on the Gorge in Fayetteville West Virginia. She is organizing the first SUP White Water Race that will be a part of the Gauley Fest, which is the largest paddling festival in the world. The Festival is Sept 16-18th. South East SUP Reporter Josh Vajda talks about the very unusually large waves, barrels, and lips from the tropical girl named Irene. These conditions were not for the faint of heart even for the SUP Surf Contest in the Summer Sup Throw Down! This contest benefitted Nana’s House which provides a healthy, safe, loving home to children who have been found in unsafe family environments until their natural home is stabilized or until permanent care can be arranged.

Scott also was one of the first SUP’rs in San Diego County, and fondly tells the stories of riding the big long Mickey Munoz boards, trying to find the right paddle, and how he believes the internet has helped SUP with it’s amazing growth!

Puerto Rico Elite Racer Heather Baus catches up with Leslie and talks about her experience completing the M2O race. How thankful she was to have such great support from her family, friends and sponsors Maui Jim, Don Q and Kialoa “without them I could not have done it”. Plus, guess the song that was running through her head the entire 32 miles, you’ll never guess! Also Heather talks about the challenges of juggling training as an elite paddler and family time. She is also hosting the 2nd Annual Escape from Coffin Island SUP Race in Puerto Rico in November 6, 2011.
