Join Leslie Kolovich as she talks with Kristian Gustavson scientist and co-founder of Below the Surface, and Adventurer, author, and motivational speaker, Dave Cornthwaite. In this podcast they talk about the California coastal 70 plus mile paddle they participated in, with a power packed team of Planet Paddlers. They were researching and highlighting conditions from the San Mateo Creek in San Diego, California, to the Tijuana River, one of the most polluted rivers in California, if not in the world. Kristian, a grad student from Scripps Institution of Oceanography talks about why there is so much pollution coming down these rivers into the Pacific Ocean, and offers possible real solutions. “We all live downstream” says Gustavson, “what we dump into our storm drains, put on our lawns, leaving pet waste on the ground eventually gets to our water.” He notes if it rains in San Diego, the Dept. of Health will advise staying out of the water for 72 hours because of toxic pollution in the runoff. People swimming and surfing in these areas are reporting sicknesses including severe staph infections and stomach problems, just to name a few. The vision for Below The Surface is to define the characteristics of water stewardship and leadership by personal example, and to empower all people to Be The Solution to water pollution. It really is simple. If we can all stop and look at what we are putting on and in our living spaces, what we are leaving behind, and what we are buying, and ask ourselves, how will this impact the environment? Think about it.
